What's the actual difference between "ferrous" and "non-ferrous" scrap, and why does it matter?

Short answer: Ferrous metals contain iron (like steel and cast iron) and are magnetic, generally lower in value per tonne but traded in large volumes, while non-ferrous metals (like copper, aluminium, brass, and stainless steel in some classifications) don't contain significant iron, aren't magnetic, and are typically worth considerably more per tonne — this basic distinction is often the very first sorting step in any scrap operation because it's quick to test (a magnet) and fundamentally changes how material is valued.
