Why are metal alloys graded and priced so differently from pure base metals?

Short answer: Alloys are deliberately mixed combinations of a base metal with other elements to achieve specific properties (like strength or corrosion resistance), and because separating those elements back out is often difficult or uneconomical, alloys are typically valued based on their specific composition and the demand for that exact alloy grade, rather than simply being priced as a discount off the pure base metal.
